Rammstein released the official video for ‘Deutschland’ on 23 October, the third preview of ‘Live in Mexico City’, which captures the three concerts the band played at Mexico City’s Foro Sol, now Estadio GNP Seguros, on 1, 2 and 4 October 2022. It follows ‘Armee der Tristen’, issued on 24 September as the first single on streaming platforms, and ‘Sonne’, whose video arrived on 5 October.
All three Mexico City nights sold out, with a capacity of 65,000 per show, drawing nearly 200,000 fans in total. They closed the North American leg of the band’s 2019-2024 stadium tour. According to the release information, gear, staging and pyrotechnics were flown in on seven 747 cargo planes, more than 200 crew members worked on the production, and it was the first time the group brought its full European production to the continent.
‘Deutschland’ was the lead single from the band’s untitled seventh studio album and came out on 28 March 2019, their first new music since ‘Mein Land’ (2011). Its video, directed by Specter Berlin, drew controversy for its dark, violent journey through episodes of German history, with Ruby Commey as Germania. The song went to number one in Germany, the band’s second chart-topper there after ‘Pussy’ (2009), and also reached the top spot in Hungary and Switzerland. Its B-side was a remix by Richard Z. Kruspe; the live album includes both versions back to back.
The film ‘Rammstein: Live in Mexico City’ was shot in 4K and directed by Paul Dugdale, whose concert films and projects include work with The Rolling Stones, Taylor Swift, Elton John and Adele. It opens in cinemas worldwide on 4 November for a limited time, distributed by Trafalgar Releasing, with Filmwelt Distribution handling German-speaking countries. France gets a screening on 6 November and Japan on 5 and 18 November. The theatrical cut runs about one hour and 50 minutes and features 20 songs.
The live album arrives on 20 November digitally, on double CD, on Blu-ray with the extended 142-minute film in Dolby Atmos, and on four-LP vinyl, in black or in a colour edition with three discs in Mexican colours and one splatter. There will also be a White Label version limited to 500 hand-numbered copies, exclusive to the band’s shop, and a deluxe edition with a 296-page hardcover photo book featuring unpublished images. On 19 March 2027 the Lucha Libre Head & Mask Edition follows, limited to 6,000 copies: it weighs about six kilos and includes a resin head with a wrestling mask, in six variants, one for each member, revealed only when the box is opened.
